Kelso, Roxburgh, and Cessford

This is night No.43/2019 living in my caravan. It's my 4th night at the Crookhouse Farm CL near Morebattle in the Scottish Borders. Again, got up around 0600 to fine weather. The longest day of the year too! It was going to be a day of big walking. I had been reading some of the guides and planned to do a long fine circular from Kelso, along the River Teviot, returning by the dismantled railway line from Roxburgh. Took the dogs in a nearby stubble field and after breakfast, we went for an hour round Bowmont Forest. We then headed into Kelso and parked at the carpark behind the Abbey. We followed the Borders Abbey Way all the way from Kelso to Roxburgh. It is a great route and a fine walk. One thing which is unique to the Borders are the number of magnificent bridges. This is the Teviot Bridge as we leave Kelso. We then followed a lovely path down to the Teviot. An absolutely stunning riverside walk. Takes us past the ruins of the huge Roxburgh Castle whi...

This is night No.42/2019 living in my caravan. It's also my 3rd night pitched at Crookhouse Farm CL near Morebattle. Again, woke to more great weather. I had decided to put up the shower last night and this was this mornings arrangement. Didn't even shut the door, it was a panoramic view of the surrounding farmland! After breakfast, back over to nearby Bowmont Forest. Great dog walking. There are miles of trails. And some even pop out onto farmland offering a good circular walk. Decided I was looking far too wild (!), so drove into Kelso for a haircut at a rather excellent Barber. £10 and she done an absolutely stunning job! I returned to the car (which you can park for free on the High St!). I moved to the free carpark behind the Abbey took the dogs for a good circular walk around the town. The very impressive remains of Kelso Abbey. The Abbey forms part of the interest on the Border Abbeys Way, a long distance route which is becoming mor...

Walking to England and back...

This is night No.41/2019 living in my caravan. It's my 2nd night at Crookhouse Farm CL, near Morebattle in the Scottish Borders. Got up fairly early, at around 0630 and took the dogs around a stubble field next to the site. In fact, it had only been cleared yesterday and was very handy for a dog walk. Made of breakfast of 4 fried eggs on a bagel. Sounds excessive, but the eggs were like sparrow eggs! The folk selling them said that it's because they are from very young hens. They certainly were perfectly formed, and very, very tasty. After this hearty meal, took the short drive into Kelso for a walk around with the dogs. It's got to be one of the finest of the Border Towns. Returned to the van, packed a lunch and headed up to Kirk Yetholm to walk out to the English Border. I'd done this a few years ago when walking the St Cuthberts Way. The route initially is shared by both the Pennine Way, and the St Cuthberts Way. It's a hilly r...
