Last day in Foyers

Image
This is night No 5/2019 living in my caravan. It's also my 5th night at Loch Ness Shores CCC Site in Foyers. I wasn't intending to stay tonight, but the weather has been great and the dog walking excellent, so decided another night wouldn't do any harm! After a early morning (0630) walk, and breakfast, we headed for another quick walk along the banks of the Loch. No wind and the water was like a Mill Pond. Again, another very mild day although a bit cloudier than of late. Later in the morning, I wanted to walk the circuit from here, up the hilly forest south of the site to Upper Foyers, then back down by the Falls. The derelict Foyers Mains Farm. This is where the owner of this site farmed and (I believe) still owns. A very historic looking building. The adjacent Dovecot is also in ruins, it's roof having collapsed. Quite a sad sight. We continued up through the forest on the shoulder of Creag Bhreac. A stiff walk! Nice views back over Lo...

Loch Ness

This is night No. 4/2019 living in my caravan. This is my 4th night at the Loch Ness Shores CCC Site in Foyers. Got up to another fine day at just after 0600. It was a good bit colder last night, not quite freezing, but must have been close to it. Took the dogs out a wander on the banks of the Loch before their (and my) breakfast. As the sun rose, there was a mist, but it was promising to be a fine day. The site is very quiet. On the lower part of the site, as I write, I am the only outfit here. After breakfast, I fancied a walk up and around the Foyers Hydro Station and through a very old Hazel Wood. This is the old, derelict, bridge upstream from the lower bridge across the river. Fine views out to the mouth of the river as it enters Loch Ness. A zoomed shot where I could just make out Urquhart Castle. The Foyers Power Station. The banks near the site. Still some mist up on the hillside at Upper Foyers. The white building was once the Foyers Hot...

Around Foyers

This is night No 3/2019 living in my caravan. It's my 3rd night at Loch Ness Shores CCC Site in Foyers, on the banks of Loch Ness. Got up around 0615, and took the dogs for a quick walk over the river from the site. The weather was surprisingly mild, and I definitely felt a 'blast' of warm air as we made our way back to the site for breakfast and a shower. After a read of my book about Edward I, 'A great and terrible King', we travelled 5 mins in the car to Inverfarigaig. I extended yesterdays walk with a loop over another viewpoint overlooking Loch Ness.   A bit grey, but very mild. After the walk, I continued up the shores of the Loch, through Dores, and into Inverness. Went to Asda for some supplies, then had a leisurely drive back to the site. Made a couple of burgers with salad for lunch. First time I've used the Remoska for burgers. Quarter Pounders, and they were excellent! And of course, they were prepared with this real fie...

Foyers

This is night No 2/2019 living in my caravan. This is also my second night at Loch Ness Shores CCC Site, in Foyers. Got up around 0630, which is no surprise! Always an early riser, especially in the van. Got dressed and took the dogs for a quick blast across the river from the site, on a way marked trail which ends at the Foyers 'factory', which is a large building associated with the Hydro scheme. After a shower and some breakfast, we drove 5 mins along the road to Farigaig Forest. On the way, probably around a mile from the site is Boleskine House. Made infamous by the carry on of its previous owner, Aleister Crowley (he of the 666 fame), and later by Jimmy Page, it is now a burnt out ruin. It went up in flames in Dec 2015 and now looks like it's lost. A shame really, last time I noticed it, it was a grand place hidden. The current owners were obviously fed up with nosey visitors as the entire building was surrounded by a huge hedge. We continued, and parked up at...

First Trip of 2019

This is the first tour of 2019. So, it is night 1/2019 living in my caravan! Now at Loch Ness Shores CCC Site in Foyers, on the bank of Loch Ness. A very reasonable £56.80 for 4 night, with power. Not bad for this site, which is regarded as one of the premium CCC Sites. Left home around 0945, after negotiating the roadworks at the bottom of the lane behind the house. I got out by the skin of my teeth, as the track was being closed and dug up to repair a bad drain. Used the Aberdeen bypass for the first time. Definitely will be my normal route to Inverness, it was excellent, quiet, and fast. The weather was also very mild. Bright all the way, and a remarkable 17c as I passed through Elgin. The Scottish record for February was also broken today, I think it was 18.3C in Aboyne! It was a bit of work getting all the kit back in the van, and I thought I was being thorough on the last minute items. However. Disaster! For the first time EVER(!), I forgot to pack my sleeping bag and ...
