Last night in Kinlochewe

Image
This is night No.12/2021 living in my caravan. It's our 4th and final night of our visit to Kinlochewe and  the last night on this 7 night jaunt. It has been a great trip despite the mixed weather. Today, for example, we got up to heavy showers, then light rain, then heavy showers and all of a sudden around 1500, it turned lovely! I also discovered a number of very quiet and nice dog friendly walks with no issue around sheep or estates or whatever. First 'damp' walk of the day was in a forest just outside Kinlochewe on the main Glen Docherty road. A small area to park (I was the only car) and a pedestrian gate led to a big spruce forest. Privately owned, but offered great walking for the dogs. After the walk, headed into the village to pick up a couple of treats for later. Some oatcakes and half a dozen eggs. When I got back to the van, I noticed that the oatcakes were over a month out of date. I always try and support the local economy of where I'm visiting, but this s...

Walks around Kinlochewe

This is night No.11/2021 living in the caravan. This is our 3rd night in Kinlochewe C&MC Site in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. This was a day of big walks. As of 1600, my step count was just under 24,000 and the day isn't over yet! The Spaniels will need at least one more walk, but that'll be later in the evening. After a morning walk around the NNR, a shower, and some breakfast, we took the short drive to Incheril, a small settlement which is more or less connected to Kinlochewe. There is a good car park here which provides parking mainly for those walking up Slioch. I was using it as parking for a walk up to the Heights of Kinlochewe, a former farming community north of Kinlochewe. Nice views looking back at the Beinn Eighe Massif. An old sheepfold across the river. Some really old wood along the river. A couple of years ago, this glen was torn up for installation of a hydro scheme. It was a real mess at the timed also resulted in a 'highway' of a track...

Around Wester Ross

This is night No.10/2021 living in my caravan. This is our second night at Kinlochewe C&MC Site in Wester Ross. Another great nights sleep and woke around 0645. It had been raining a lot through the night and was still showery when we got ready for our early morning jaunt around the next door NNR. The cloud was covering the top of Slioch across the road. The weather did in fact improve quite a bit as the day wore on. The showers got lighter and even the sun made an appearance. After breakfast, took the dogs a walk through the village to a gate I had spotted into a forest just outside Kinlochewe.  Passed the rather ominous looking Church of Scotland. The bridge across the river through Kinlochewe. The water is named A'Ghairbhe. Arrived at the forest, but unfortunately there were no tracks or paths I could follow through the tumble of fallen trees! Still, it was the greenest forest I have ever seen. The whole place was coated in moss, testament to the purity of the air in ...

Kinlochewe

This is night No.9/2021 living in my caravan. We are now pitched at Kinlochewe C&MC Site in Wester Ross.  This is a great site. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it remained closed for the entire season in 2020. I last visited here in April 2018, over 3 years ago! It's located on the NC500 route and the area has got a lot busier over the last few years. The petrol station and adjacent cafe seem to be thriving, even during this pandemic. Slept great last night, and after breakfast of eggs and a bagel, we headed for a good runaround on the 'Secret Beach' down the road, then back to the van to pack everything away. It was a lovely morning, like yesterday when I had used a break in the weather to pack away the awning which was more or less dry. The first thing I done here at Kinlochewe was to erect the awning, and just as well I did as it's already raining! We left Nairn to around 0930 for a leisurely bimble up the road to Kinlochewe. The journey was predicted to take ...
